What is the Validity of Marine Medical Certificate?

Medicals for Maritime Shipping crew 18 years of age or older has a validity of 2 years, calculated from the date of the examination, whereas the medical examination below the age of 18 has a validity of only 1 year. If the period of validity of the health certificate expires during a ship’s voyage, the certificate will remain valid until its first call at a port where it is possible to examine without any delay. However, more than 3 months from the date of expiry will not be accepted.

The medical examination of Directorate General of Shipping (D.G. Shipping) includes the following:

  • A full physical examination by checking your height, weight, blood pressure is taken depending on the kind of work the patient will be doing or the particular cruise line’s requirements.
  • An eye examination is done to check your eyesight (with and without glasses) and colour vision testing is also done.
  • Urine test is done to check for indicators of diabetes and kidney problems.

  • Chest X-ray.
  • Hearing test.
  • Additional tests like an ECG and a pregnancy test (for female candidates).

  • Fasting lipid and blood glucose

  • It is advised to report at the clinic at 8 AM without having breakfast for accurate diagnostic test results.
  • Fasting for 8-10 hours.
  • Regular food intake on the day before testing (avoid any manipulation in diet, as this may lead to abnormal results).
  • Avoid un-prescribed medication.
  • Drink adequate amount of water.
