Every person working onboard must have a certificate attesting his fitness for the work for which he is to be employed at sea. This is to make sure that they would not pose a risk to the passengers and other employees on board. Seafarers deal with irregular working hours and adjust to the climatic changes. Therefore, people working away from home in the middle of the waters require safety health measures taken before the voyage. The purpose is to avoid any health-related issues cropping up during their tenure enabling them to perform their duties.

Maritime Authorities have a standard (as per ILO-147) that requires all employees to be medically fit for service onboard cruise ships. Anyone desiring to work or currently working on a cruise ship should have a valid certificate. Flag state medicals for Greek, Panama, Liberia, Marshal Islands, Vanuatu, Cyprus, Singapore, Malaysia etc. can also be processed.

What is the Validity of Marine Medical Certificate?

Medicals for Maritime Shipping crew 18 years of age or older has a validity of 2 years, calculated from the date of the examination, whereas the medical examination below the age of 18 has a validity of only 1 year. If the period of validity of the health certificate expires during a ship’s voyage, the certificate will remain valid until its first call at a port where it is possible to examine without any delay. However, more than 3 months from the date of expiry will not be accepted.

What is done during Medicals for Maritime Shipping Crew?

The medical examination of Directorate General of Shipping (D.G. Shipping) includes the following:

  • A full physical examination by checking your height, weight, blood pressure is taken depending on the kind of work the patient will be doing or the particular cruise line’s requirements.
  • An eye examination is done to check your eyesight (with and without glasses) and colour vision testing is also done.
  • Urine test is done to check for indicators of diabetes and kidney problems.
  • Listing any medication, you are currently taking.
  • An enquiry regarding your previous medical history.
  • A self-declaration questionnaire to be completed by the employee.
  • Chest X-ray.
  • Hearing test.
  • Additional tests like an ECG and a pregnancy test (for female candidates).

Blood tests for:

  • Full blood count
  • Urea and electrolytes
  • HIV test
  • STI screening
  • Hepatitis screen (A, B, C)
  • Liver function
  • Fasting lipid and blood glucose

Kindly arrive at your examination after fasting for 12 hours and certain vaccination may be required depending on your destination.

What documents should be produced for the Medicals for Maritime Shipping Crew?

  • Photo ID proof approved by the Government (such as passport, driving license, PAN card, etc).
  • Requisition letter from the company (if any) or provide the vessel’s name & location.
  • Six latest passport size photographs. (maximum 6 months old)
  • Carry medical prescription, prescribed spectacles and previous medical notes.
  • Please present your previous medical fitness certificate and complete record for ongoing treatment or if you have undergone any treatment.

What are the instructions to be followed by Shipping Crew for medicals?

We suggest that you take an appointment in advance for your check-up.

  • It is advised to report at the clinic at 8 AM without having breakfast for accurate diagnostic test results.
  • Fasting for 8-10 hours.
  • Regular food intake on the day before testing (avoid any manipulation in diet, as this may lead to abnormal results).
  • Avoid un-prescribed medication.
  • Drink adequate amount of water.
